An update for Borderlands 3 including full crossplay support is almost here. However, crossplay will not be supported on PlayStation consoles.

Gearbox Software is currently preparing to release an update for Borderlands 3 that includes full cosplay support, meaning gamers will soon be able to play online with those playing the game on other platforms. However, Sony’s PlayStation consoles will not support this crossplay feature.

Gearbox President and CEO Randy Pitchford made an announcement in a post to Twitter. “Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms,” he wrote. “Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.”

While Pitchford noted that Gearbox removed Borderlands 3‘s crossplay support from PlayStation consoles at the behest of the game’s publisher, 2K Games, he did not specifically state whether the decision to exclude PlayStation from the game’s crossplay function was ultimately made by 2K or Sony.

Borderlands 3 initially released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows and macOS in September of 2019, with a Google Stadia version arriving two months later in December. The game then made its way to the Xbox Series XS and the PlayStation 5 in November of 2020. The game did not support cross-platform play at launch, though Gearbox has long planned to add crossplay support at some point. However, it looks like the PS4 and PS5 are being left out.
